WhatsApp to launch feature that transcribes voice messages

WhatsApp has begun testing a new feature that allows users to transcribe voice messages. This feature is currently available for beta testers using the iOS 23.9.0.70 beta version and will be released to all users once the trial is completed.

The new feature will help users access the content of voice messages in situations where they can’t listen to them. The transcription will be added to the message bubble, making it easier for users to read. The feature is enabled by default, but users can disable it by visiting WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcripts.

The transcription process takes place locally on the user’s device, using language packs and end-to-end encryption is preserved. The feature is only available for some users on newer versions of iOS, as it uses the latest APIs provided by iOS 16 that allow the app to process the voice message locally on the user’s device. The transcription feature for voice notes also allows users to search for specific information within the message, as the text is indexed and searchable.
