Ryanair Wins Challenge Against Lufthansa State Bailout in EU Court

The General Court of the European Union ruled in favor of Irish airline Ryanair on Wednesday, supporting the company’s challenge against the state bailout granted to Germany’s Lufthansa in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The EU competition regulators approved the 6 billion euro bailout, but the Luxembourg-based tribunal cited mistakes made by the EU executive in their decision. The cases, named T-34/21 Ryanair v Commission (Lufthansa; Covid-19) & T-87/21 Condor Flugdienst v Commission (Lufthansa; Covid-19), were both related to Lufthansa’s pandemic relief.
