Sweden warns that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline has two gas leaks.
Stockholm: The Swedish Maritime Authority said on Tuesday that it had warned of two leaks on the Russian-owned Nord Stream 1 pipeline in Swedish and Danish waters. This came soon after a leak was found on the nearby Nord Stream 2 project.
“Nord Stream 1 has two leaks, one in the economic zone of Sweden and one in the economic zone of Denmark. They are close together. “Reuters was told this by a representative of the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA).”
A spokesperson said that the leaks were northeast of the Danish island of Bornholm. It wasn’t clear right away why there were leaks.
A second SMA spokesperson said, “We are keeping extra watch to make sure no ship gets too close to the site.”
After gas from the old Nord Stream 2 pipeline leaked into the Baltic Sea on Monday, Danish officials told ships to stay away from an area five nautical miles southeast of Bornholm.
Related: After Nord Stream was shut down, Gazprom sent gas to Europe through Ukraine.
Later that same day, the operator of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which ran at a lower capacity from mid-June until it shut down completely in August, said that the pressure on both lines of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline had dropped.
The Baltic Pipe, a new subsea pipeline that will bring gas from Norway to Poland and have an annual capacity of 10 billion cubic metres per day, will be opened on Tuesday evening.
