Karachi Administrator and Sindh Government Spokesperson Murtaza Wahab said on Saturday that reviving student unions will contribute to strengthening the educational environment throughout the province.
Murtaza Wahab said this in a statement thanking Sindh Legislature members and the province’s residents for the passing of the “historical law” by the provincial assembly.
“The Pakistan Peoples Party and members of all political parties in parliament deserve congratulations on the passage of the historic law,” he said, adding that the reinstatement of student unions in educational institutions has been a long-standing demand of students.
As a result, he said, another promise made by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s vision had been achieved. He said that in the past, because of totalitarian tactics, the Kalashnikov culture thrived in schools.
While the entire laws governing the unions may be set by the different educational institutions after two months, the Sindh Assembly’s bill on student unions stipulates that a union at an educational institute, whether private or public, must have seven to eleven members. Elections would be held every year, and all students who were enrolled would be able to vote or participate.
Any student who is enrolled in a school can’t have a gun while they’re there.
