Shibli Faraz requests that the ECP keep its promise to use EVMs in LG elections.
Federal Science and Technology Minister Shibli Faraz has requested Pakistan’s Election Commission to follow through on its commitment to use electronic voting machines (EVM) in local government elections in Punjab and Islamabad.
The minister told the media on Wednesday that if the electoral board does not want to purchase EVMs from a private business, it may get them from any source. He stated that the ECP should follow through on its promise to hold LG elections using EVMs in Punjab and the federal capital.
“The ministry fulfilled its duty on time and created the machines in accordance with the requirements of the electoral body,” Faraz said, adding that the voting machines’ operation was demonstrated in Parliament, provincial legislatures, and across the nation.
He stated that the current administration does not want to introduce any specific equipment. The minister stated that it is the ECP’s constitutional and legal right to pick the machine it prefers, and the government will publish a global tender for the chosen gadget.
Faraz stated that legislation has been adopted requiring EVMs to be used in elections in 2023, and that the process should be carried out on a daily basis.
