Sania Mirza, an Indian tennis ace, has announced her retirement from the sport.

According to reports, Sania Mirza made the statements during her first-round loss in the women’s doubles at the Australian Open.

“I’ve determined that this will be my final season.” I’m going to take it one week at a time. I’m not sure if I’ll make it through the season, but I’m determined to do so.” She told reporters about it.

Mirza, 35, became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title in 2005.

However, an injury forced her to shift her concentration to doubles, where she won Wimbledon with Swiss star Martina Hingis in 2015, before going on to win the US and Australian Opens.

She came close to earning an Olympic medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 when she and Rohan Bopanna played Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram in the semi-finals, but eventually fell short.

She also holds two Grand Slam victories with partner Mahesh Bhupathi, winning the Australian Open mixed doubles title in 2009 and the French Open mixed doubles title in 2012.

Mirza began playing tennis as a child during her summer holidays, but she took it seriously until she began winning adult competitions — she won her first senior championship when she was 15 years old at the 2002 Asian Games.

She joined the WTA Tour in 2003 and reached the world’s 27th singles ranking, the highest ever attained by an Indian woman.

Mirza has also received a great deal of attention for her personal life, particularly her marriage to former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik. The couple have a three-year-old daughter.
