The cryptocurrency was built on the Bitcoin (BTC) system, but it is different from Bitcoin (BTC) in a few ways, such as the hard cap, the amount of time it takes to process block transactions, and the hashing algorithm it uses. Litecoin is great for microtransactions and point-of-sale transactions because the block time is only 2.5 minutes and transaction fees are very low.
On October 7, 2011, an open-source client for Litecoin was made available on GitHub. Five days later, on October 13, 2011, the Litecoin Network began to work. Since then, its popularity and merchant acceptance have grown like wildfire, and for most of its life, it has been one of the ten most valuable cryptocurrencies by market capitalization.
Charlie Lee, who used to work at Google, made Litecoin to be a “lite version of Bitcoin” because it has many of the same features as Bitcoin but is lighter.
