Although Litecoin was built on the Bitcoin (BTC) system, it varies from Bitcoin (BTC) in several ways, including its hard cap, block transaction timeframes, and hashing algorithm used. With a block time of only 2.5 minutes and incredibly low transaction fees, Litecoin is suitable for point-of-sale transactions and microtransactions.
On October 7, 2011, Litecoin became available as an open-source client on GitHub, and five days later, on October 13, 2011, the Litecoin Network went live. Since then, it has gained enormous popularity and merchant acceptance and has remained among the top ten cryptocurrencies by market capitalization for most of its existence.
Litecoin was created by Charlie Lee, a former Google employee, to be a “lite version of Bitcoin” in that it shares many of the same features as Bitcoin but is lighter in weight.
