NEXT TO NEW DELHI:The Indian Premier League (IPL), the world’s most lucrative cricket tournament, will begin on March 26, although the league phase will be confined to two locations because of the COVID, according to sources.
The lucrative Twenty20 game, which started in India last year but was moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the middle, will be hosted for the 15th time in Mumbai and Pune.
“The IPL will begin on March 26,” IPL chairman Brijesh Patel was cited as saying in the Indian media during a governing council meeting on Thursday.
“We, too, will have crowds, but in line with the strategy of the Maharashtra government.”
Ten teams, including two new clubs, the Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, will participate in 70 league matches across four venues. The season concludes on May 29.
At each venue, a limited number of tickets will be available, and IPL organisers will choose whether or not to tighten attendance restrictions as the event goes on.
The locations of the playoff matches will be chosen later, and a full schedule of matches will be revealed in early March.
When the Mumbai Indians, who have won five times, bought Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan at the auction, the wicketkeeper-batsman sold for $2 million.
When England’s Liam Livingstone was sold to the Punjab Kings for $1.52 million, he was the most expensive foreign player.
When Mahendra Singh Dhoni led the Chennai Super Kings to victory in Dubai last year, they won the trophy for the fourth time. They beat Kolkata Knight Riders in the final to win the trophy.
Due to the epidemic, the IPL 2020 was also held in the UAE.
The league is a big moneymaker for India’s Board of Control for Cricket, which has a lot of money. It adds more than $11 billion to the country’s economy.
