Washington, D.C. Ilhan Omar, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress in the United States, arrived in Islamabad early Wednesday on a four-day visit.
Ms. Omar and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, both elected in 2018, are the first Muslim women to serve in Congress.
Ms. Omar, a Somali-born former refugee, is also the first naturalized African-born member of Congress and the state’s first woman of color. In the main election, she received 78.0 percent of the vote, the highest percentage ever received by a female candidate in Minnesota. She was sworn in using her grandfather’s copy of the Holy Quran.
Ms. Omar landed in Pakistan in the early hours of Wednesday and will remain there till April 24. There are plans for her to visit Lahore and Azad Kashmir, where she will also meet the new leaders of the country, as well.
