Status quo dislikes EVMs because they may reject opponents’ votes.

Prime Minister Imran Khan stated that the issue of votes being rejected due to double stamping during the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) local body elections has resurfaced.

He stated in a tweet on Wednesday that the same had been revealed in the report of the judicial commission on the 2013 elections.

He stated that one of the reasons the status quo opposes Electronic Voting Machines is the ability to manipulate elections by having opponents’ votes rejected (EVMs).

Last year, the House concluded a joint session of parliament by passing 33 bills, including contentious amendments to the Election Act, and deferring one.

Two of the opposition’s bills were also passed, and the deferred bill focused on election reforms.

The joint sitting of Parliament’s regular agenda included 60 items, including 29 bills, and a supplementary agenda was later introduced on the floor.

The government had deferred one bill and managed to pass the other 28 bills. The joint sitting also passed five bills introduced in the supplementary order.

Bill 2021, Election (Second Amendment), was one of the few that passed. It was one of the government’s most contentious bills, as it would allow the Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct polls using EVMs.

Additionally, the International Court of Justice (Review and Reconsideration) Bill 2021 was passed. According to the opposition, the government passed the bill in order to provide relief to Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav.

Additionally, the SBP Banking Services Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2021 passed with a majority.
