Nissan plans to invest approximately $725 million in Renault’s electric vehicle (EV) unit, according to Yomiuri.

Nissan is fixin’ to pour in a hefty sum of $725 million into Renault’s electric vehicle (EV) unit, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun. This move might just clear the way for their long-drawn-out talks to revamp their automobile alliance.

As per the Yomiuri, the Japanese carmaker recently nailed down the terms for a contract to give their partnership with Renault a makeover. They also agreed on the amount they’ll be investing in the EV unit called Ampere.

Hold your horses, though! A spokesperson for Nissan says that the contract discussions, including the investment amount, ain’t set in stone just yet. They’re still chattin’ it up between the two companies, but no agreement has been reached, as the spokesperson mentioned.

Word on the street is that Nissan and Renault reckon Ampere’s worth will amount to a cool 8 to 10 billion euros. From what the Yomiuri’s insiders spillin’, Nissan’s investment will likely be less than 10% of that figure. However, it falls short of the 15% limit Nissan set back in February.

According to the newspaper, a Nissan director will be jumpin’ onboard the new company. They also mentioned that certain restrictions will be put in place when it comes to handling intellectual property from the Japanese carmaker.

After months of intense negotiations, Nissan and Renault finally came to an agreement in January to overhaul their alliance that’s been goin’ strong for two decades. As part of the shake-up, Renault will reduce its stake in Nissan from around 43% to a more equal level of 15%.

Now, let’s not forget, this partnership has expanded over the years to include Mitsubishi Motors as well. They’ve been in cahoots since way back in 1999.

Keep in mind, $1 equals about 138.0200 yen, in case you were wonderin’.

So there you have it, folks! Nissan’s primed to invest a hefty chunk of change into Renault’s EV unit, and it just might pave the way for a fresh start in their automobile alliance. Stay tuned for more updates!
