While the review is ongoing, the Biden administration will maintain tariffs on China.

Washington On Friday, the Biden administration said it will keep tariffs on imports from China worth hundreds of billions of dollars in place while it continues a legal review of the tariffs put in place by former President Donald Trump.

In a federal notice, the office of the U.S. Trade Representative said that it had received requests from businesses and other interested parties to keep the “Section 301” tariffs that were put in place in 2018 and 2019. During the spring and summer, the comments were gathered.

The tariffs were put in place because of a trade law from 1974. USTR will now do a formal review to decide whether or not to keep the tariffs in place. This could take months.

As a way to ease inflationary pressures, the Biden administration had thought about getting rid of some tariffs.

Last month, Reuters said that this move had been put on hold because of China’s military exercises near Taiwan after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip there.
