The NLC Commences Work on the Gilgit-Shandur Road

Construction has begun on one of the most important road projects in Pakistan, which will be an alternative to the Karakoram Highway and connect the region’s beautiful valleys.

The CPEC standard road will have a huge impact on Pakistan’s tourism industry and the lives of people in Gilgit-Baltistan.

NLC will build a 76-kilometer section of the Gilgit–Shandur Road in a difficult environment characterized by inaccessibility, high altitude, hostile weather, and steep mountain formations.

In addition to establishing a camp equipped with sophisticated engineering facilities, NLC has already moved machinery, plants, and equipment.

Visitors who come to the area every year for the festival will be able to get a place to stay at the Shandur end of the project, which is being built now.

The project’s narrow weather window for construction makes it a demanding technical undertaking.

The potential of rocks and landslides is heightened during construction, as well as during periods of heavy snow and rain.

Located at an elevation of almost 12,500 feet above sea level, the weather is pleasant for just four months of the year.

The road has been upgraded from provincial to national highway status, bringing these isolated valleys into line with the rest of Gilgit-developed Baltistan’s districts. The travel time between Gilgit and the Shandur valley will be shortened from seven to four hours.
