Israel and Germany have agreed on a three-billion euro submarine agreement.

JERICHO (JTA) —According to the Israeli Defense Ministry, an agreement has been inked between the Israeli Defense Ministry and Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems for the development and manufacturing of three sophisticated submarines for the Israeli Navy.

According to the deal, Israel will acquire three submarines from the “Dakar” class for around 3 billion euros (3.41 billion US dollars), the Defense Ministry stated in a statement on Thursday.

According to a 2017 deal between the two countries, the German government will pay a portion of the acquisition. According to the deal, the first submarine will be handed to Israel within nine years, and it will involve the development of a training simulator in Israel as well as the delivery of replacement components. In addition, the two parties inked a strategic partnership deal worth over 850 million euros.

“I would like to thank the German government for its cooperation in moving the deal forward and for its commitment to Israel’s security,” Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said on Twitter.

The new submarines, he added, “would strengthen the capabilities of the Israeli Navy and contribute to Israel’s security dominance in the area.”
