“It will set an example for the rest of the globe,’ says the PM as he introduces the Naya Pakistan Sehat Card.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan introduced the Naya Pakistan Qaumi Sehat Card scheme for Islamabad residents on Wednesday, saying Pakistan will “set an example” for the rest of the world with this Rs450 billion welfare effort.

According to Radio Pakistan, all households in Islamabad, Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and Tharparkar would be eligible for free medical treatment at government and private clinics under the plan.

Every household would be able to use the card to obtain healthcare services worth up to one million rupees per year.

He told the audience, which included Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Faisal Sultan, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, and others.

“This will be a watershed event in the advancement of healthcare services in Pakistan,” he said.

In Pakistan, he described the establishment of such a centre as a “landmark step” in assisting those who are burdened by the cost of pricey medical treatment.

The prime minister stated that anyone with the card may be treated at any private medical institution, bemoaning that the country’s health system is mainly used to “serve the privileged.”

He said that physicians did not travel to remote regions to continue their profession, and as a result, individuals living there did not have access to adequate treatment. “People from Mianwali travel to Islamabad and Rawalpindi to get treated.”

In light of the high death rate from neonatal and pregnancy issues, he stated that the government was creating five mother-child hospitals.

The prime minister stated that the Rehmatul Lil Alameen Authority will also showcase the Prophet’s (Peace be Upon Him) style of life, which emphasises empathy for the poor and needy.

Usman Buzdar’s campaign

The prime minister, while criticising the opposition, stated that a campaign was being initiated against the Punjab chief minister. “This campaign against him is beyond anything I’ve ever seen.”

Despite the campaign, the prime minister remarked that a recent study found that people were satisfied with CM Buzdar’s development efforts and performance.

Thesilent revolution

The chief minister, for his part, stated that by the end of March, all of Punjab would be able to use the Sehat Card’s services. “The administration has more than doubled the health budget.”

Meanwhile, speaking at the occasion, Dr Sultan stated that the Sehat Card feature will be gradually extended to people across the country, claiming that Pakistan was on its way to becoming a welfare state.

In Pakistan’s health sector, he claims, a “quiet revolution” is taking place. Dr. Sultan went on to say that the Sehat Card would benefit middle-class families whose budgets were strained when a member of their family became ill.
