On Friday, the U.S. crypto company Harmony said that thieves stole around $100 million worth of digital coins from one of its key items. This was the latest in a long line of digital thefts from an area that programmers had already set up.
The agreement makes use of blockchains and non-fungible tokens for so-called “decentralised finance,” which are shared sites that offer loans and other services without the usual guards like banks.
The California-based company said that the theft hit its Horizon “span,” which is a tool for moving crypto between different blockchains. Blockchains are the hidden programming that digital tokens like bitcoin and ether use.
Burglaries have been a problem for companies in the crypto space for a long time, even though blockchain spans are getting more and more specific.
The London-based blockchain analysis firm Elliptic says that more than $1 billion has been taken from Spans so far in 2022.
The agreement tweeted that it was “working with public experts and measurable experts to figure out who was at fault and get back the stolen assets” without giving any more details.
Harmony said in a statement that it had a group of people from all over the world “working nonstop to solve the problem.”
A representative said, “We are currently reducing the possible attack vectors while trying to find the offender.” Harmony had also tried to reach the programmer through an exchange to their crypto wallet address.
Elliptic, which keeps track of publicly available blockchain information, said that the programmers took ether, Tether, and USD Coin from Harmony and then traded them for ether using what they said were decentralised trades.
In March, programmers stole about $615 million worth of digital money from Ronin Bridge, which was used in the game Axie Infinity to move crypto. The United States linked the break-in to programmers from North Korea.
