New York (Reuters) – In honour of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, the Empire State Building in New York will be lit up in purple and gold on Saturday.
Emma Wade-Smith, who is the British Consul General in New York, and Mark Ronson, who is a British-American DJ, songwriter, and producer, turned on a model of the tower on Friday.
At the lighting ceremony, Ronson stated, “It’s a beacon, much like the queen, who embodies so much of what we and the rest of the world love about the UK.”
Queen Elizabeth, who is 96 years old, is commemorating 70 years as head of state. She has now held the British throne longer than any of her predecessors in the previous thousand years.
When her father, George VI, died in February 1952, she became queen of the United Kingdom and more than a dozen other realms, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
