BangalORE “Empathy” as captain was praised by cricketers on Tuesday after India’s sixth straight series win since Rohit Sharma took over from Virat Kohli, when he took over.
India thrashed Sri Lanka by 238 runs in three days on Monday, sweeping the series 2-0 and extending their home Test series win streak to 15.
Rohit, 34, has led the team to a perfect record in 14 matches as captain, but it’s his leadership style that has been praised, not Kohli’s more confrontational style.
“There is something about him that is just disarming. He is praising his players and providing them with a chance. I believe there is a much higher level of empathy, “experienced analyst Harsha Bhogle said on the cricbuzz website.
“I’m not sure whether he’ll be as aggressive as Virat Kohli on the field, but he definitely adds a different flavor.“
Rohit, who won five Indian Premier League championships with the Mumbai Indians, was appointed Test captain last month after succeeding Kohli in limited-overs and Twenty20 cricket.
Teammates have already lauded his hands-on approach with players.
Ravichandran Ashwin, the spin bowler, talked of the “human components” in Rohit’s leadership during their opening victory in Mohali last week.
Former teammates lauded Rohit’s dependability as captain.
Wasim Jaffer tweeted, “3-0 vs NZ (T20I), 3-0 vs WI (ODI), 3-0 vs WI (T20I), 3-0 vs SL (T20I), 2-0 vs SL (Tests).”
Rohit said that he guided his leadership mostly through his cricketing instincts, while also seeking guidance from the more experienced members of his side.
“I received assistance from my teammates. “There are a few experienced individuals on the squad who have a good understanding of the game and have contributed as well,” Rohit said.
“I also have a reading of the game. However, you ultimately operate on instinct, and my captaincy philosophy is to make the choice that feels right to you while keeping an eye on the game’s direction. “
Test cricket will take a back seat for the next several months when the world’s wealthiest Twenty20 event, the Indian Premier League (IPL), gets underway on March 26.
India’s next Test match will be in England in July, completing a five-match series that was left incomplete last year due to a COVID outbreak among the visiting party. India now leads the series 2-1 with one match remaining.
“I believe we are making progress. When we play our next test match, it will be an entirely different task, “Rohit said.
“Before that, we have two months of IPL, and the boys have reported to their teams, where they will hope to perform well.
“After the IPL concludes, we will decide our next course of action as a team, go to the United Kingdom, and assess the combinations we will need to play.”
