Elon Musk announced on Thursday that, starting next week, Twitter would provide a “universal amnesty” to suspended accounts for users who had not breached the law or participated in flagrant spam.
72.4% of the more than 3.16 million participants in a poll Musk held on Twitter on Wednesday voted in support of allowing people who had been suspended by the social media platform to return.
Musk, who bought Twitter last month, tweeted on Thursday, “The people have spoken.” “Next week, amnesty will begin.”
The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, restored some previously suspended accounts last week, including those of comedian Kathy Griffin, mocking website Babylon Bee, and former US President Donald Trump.

In October, he posted that Twitter would create a committee for content moderation “with vastly varied opinions.” Before the council met, there were no significant content decisions or account reinstatements, according to Musk.
The first few weeks of the billionaire’s ownership of Twitter have been characterized by change and confusion. Senior officials in charge of security and privacy have resigned, and he has removed top managers, including former Chief Executive Parag Agarwal.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, whose mandate includes consumer protection, said it was monitoring Twitter with “great concern” as a result of those resignations.
