Nvidia Challenges Intel and AMD in Supercomputing Domain with New Chip

In a recent collaboration with the University of Bristol in the UK, Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) announced the development of a groundbreaking supercomputer utilizing their latest chip, posing a competitive threat to Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD).

As the world’s leading manufacturer of graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia has garnered significant demand for their products due to their exceptional performance in accelerating artificial intelligence tasks. Notably, Nvidia GPUs were instrumental in the creation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, powered by thousands of these cutting-edge processors.

Traditionally, Nvidia’s GPUs have been coupled with central processing units (CPUs), a market long dominated by Intel and AMD. However, this year, Nvidia has made a notable entry into the CPU market with the introduction of Grace, their own CPU chip based on technology from Arm Ltd., a subsidiary of SoftBank Group Corp.

During a supercomputing conference in Germany, Nvidia unveiled their collaboration with British researchers and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE: HPE) to develop Isambard 3, a revolutionary computer exclusively powered by Nvidia’s Grace CPU chips, devoid of any Nvidia GPUs. The University of Bristol will employ this cutting-edge system for climate science, drug discovery, and various other research areas.

Ian Buck, General Manager and Vice President of Accelerated Computing at Nvidia, expressed his excitement about the project’s remarkable energy efficiency, stating, “What’s exciting is the whole thing is operating on 270 kilowatts of power. That’s actually six times more performance and energy efficiency than the university’s previous system, Isambard 2.”
