What does the MQM-P stand to gain by aligning with the opposition?
Less than a week before the National Assembly votes on a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Imran Khan, the attention is on Karachi’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan.
With seven members in the National Assembly, the MQM-P is Khan’s biggest ally.
If they choose to support the opposition political parties, they will provide a comfortable lead for the vote of no-confidence to topple the prime minister. However, if the MQM-P decides to remain in government, the opposition may face difficulties.
Thus, in which direction will the pendulum swing? That is still up for debate.
Until then, he questioned political analysts and journalists about the MQM-motivations of P’s for defecting from the governing party.
‘To prevent PPP from encroaching on their territory,
The 18th Amendment vests the Sindh government with complete authority and resources. Now that the PPP has a majority in the Sindh Assembly, it has been wresting powers from city governments and redrawing seats in order to assist it in winning the Karachi and Hyderabad local government elections.
In this circumstance, the vote of no-confidence gives the MQM-P a chance to deal with the PPP and prevent it from infringing on its territory in large cities.
This isn’t to say the MQM-P doesn’t think the PPP will live up to its expectations or that the alliance won’t last, so it has chosen the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan People’s Party–N (PPP–N) to be its “guarantees.”
The PPP will have to make significant concessions as a result of this new deal. This indicates that the PPP will face pressure in the coming days from its main Sindhi support base and Sindhi ethnic groups.
Because the MQM-P was in the federal government and worked with the PTI, it’s also worth noting that the MQM-P refused to accept the PTI’s victory in Karachi, often saying that the city’s votes were stolen and given to the PPP.
Thus, forming an alliance with the PTI benefited the MQM-P nothing. To begin with, the majority of the difficulties it faced were within the provincial government’s jurisdiction. Second, their demand for the reopening of their party offices and the return of people who have been missing is linked to the establishment of the party.
This is an excellent chance for MQM-P to get a seat in municipal elections‘
If the MQM-P chooses to join the opposition, regardless of whether they get guarantees from the PML-N, the PPP and the MQM-P will eventually need to work out a power-sharing arrangement for Sindh, particularly Karachi.
This is a great time for the MQM-P to come up with a plan for getting into local government, which the PPP hasn’t done very well with so far.
The PTI eroded the MQM-vote P’s bank in the most recent national elections. Nonetheless, the PTI was mainly absent when it came to Karachi’s challenges.
There are two ways for this to happen: if the MQM-P sides with the opposition and the party negotiates with political skill, as PML-Rana N’s Sanaullah said yesterday, it will be good news for both parties. Because the MQM-P has a legitimate claim to Karachi’s government, this could be a good thing for both parties.to the
Whether the “umpire” likes it or not, the PPP and the MQM-P will eventually have to sit together, or the situation in Karachi will remain unstable.
