The impasse continues as Nawaz is hesitant to back Elahi as the next Punjab chief minister, according to sources.

ISLAMABAD: Former President Asif Ali Zardari has nominated Shehbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as the future prime minister in the event that the opposition succeeds in toppling Prime Minister Imran Khan through a fresh confidence vote, sources told Bol News on Friday.

Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F), and Zardari are conferring on the appointment of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as Punjab Chief Minister. The PML-N has not yet settled on a name for Elahi.

Ayaz Sadiq and Khurshid Shah are regarded as frontrunners for the National Assembly speaker position, while Yousuf Raza Gillani is being considered for the Senate Chairman position. The Balochistan Awami Party and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) are in discussions to form the province’s next coalition administration.

Insiders say that the opposition is planning to introduce a resolution of no confidence in both the federal and provincial legislatures at the same time.

Meanwhile, Zardari paid a visit to Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Sirajul Haq at the party’s Mansoora headquarters in Lahore on Thursday. Sirajul Haqj informed Zardari about the opposition’s strategy and the discussions that took place between other major opposition parties and government allies over a vote of no-confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The former president explained to the JI leader that he had come to seek the vote and support of his party.

Siraj expressed his party’s worries about the usage of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in approaching elections.

Siraj said that they have a lot of reservations about using EVMs to vote because it will put a lot of people at risk.
