Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s India record for most runs scored in away ODIs with a 51-run effort in the first of three matches on Wednesday, despite the tourists losing by 31 runs.
Kohli ha3s now hit 5,108 runs, beating Tendulkar’s previous high of 5,065. He also surpassed Australian great Ricky Ponting’s 5,090 to become the second most in away 50-over contests, trailing only Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (5,518).
Kohli, 33, announced his retirement from the Test captaincy on Saturday, after already resigning as Twenty20 captain and being fired from ODI leadership responsibilities.
Kohli was India’s most successful Test captain, leading the team to 40 victories in 68 matches over a seven-year period.
