ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan was ousted as Prime Minister of Pakistan in the early hours of Sunday morning after a vote of no-confidence. Now, the National Assembly is meeting to choose the country’s 23rd Prime Minister.
The session to elect a new prime minister is chaired by Deputy Speaker NA Qasim Suri.
The deputy speaker explains why he issued the contentious order on April 3, 2022. He said that the decision was made in view of the worldwide conspiracy against Pakistan’s prior administration.
Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi then had the chance to speak. Then the deputy speaker gave him the chance to speak as well.
Shehbaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and a former Foreign Minister, are both running for the top job.
Shehbaz Sharif seems to be a strong contender to be Pakistan’s next prime minister, despite his nomination in a high-profile money laundering case.
The House Leader will be chosen by a vote held in two lobbies of the NA designated for the purpose.
Following the conclusion of the voting process, the Speaker will proclaim the winner.
It should be remembered that in the 342-member House, 172 votes are necessary to be named Leader of the House.
