Shahzad Akbar, the Prime Minister’s adviser on accountability and the Interior, has resigned.

ISLAMABAD: Mirza Shahzad Akbar, the prime minister’s adviser on accountability and the interior, resigned on Monday.

In a tweet, Akbar said that he had tendered his resignation as Prime Minister Imran Khan’s advisor. He has stated, however, that he will remain involved with the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) and contribute as a member of the legal fraternity.

“I resigned from my position as advisor to the PM today.” “I really hope that the accountability process continues under [the] leadership of PM IK in accordance with the PTI’s agenda,” he stated.

According to PTI sources, Prime Minister Imran Khan was dissatisfied with Akbar’s handling of important ongoing investigations against senior opposition figures, including Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz.

According to the sources, the PM was dissatisfied with the development in the case of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and the PTI administration was unable to bring him back from London, where he had been receiving medical care since November 8, 2019.

According to the sources, Akbar was asked to submit his resignation or he would have been fired.

They stated that a new adviser to oversee the existing regime’s accountability process will be chosen shortly in order to expedite the process and achieve the required objectives before the next general election.
