LOC CEASSEFIRE

THE Pakistan-India relationship is known for its intricacy and harshness, yet there are times when shocks of a more certain sort are sprung. The new choice by the two militaries to respect the 2003 truce along the LoC positively qualifies as a wonderful amazement, considering the bitterness that has checked relations of later.

In a joint articulation delivered after hotline contact between the separate chiefs general military activities, “the two sides concurred for exacting recognition, everything being equal, … along the LoC and any remaining areas”. Taking into account that two years prior on this date both atomic furnished adversaries were about to start a major world conflict war, this is an invite improvement. Besides, such a large number of blameless lives have been lost in cross-line shelling and truce infringement a year ago.

The move has not gone unnoticed, with the US State Department representative inviting the move and empowering proceeded “endeavors to improve correspondence between the different sides”. Washington has likewise asked Islamabad and New Delhi to hold direct conferences on Kashmir.

It is hard to say in solid terms whether this improvement is the aftereffect of reciprocal backchannel contacts among Pakistan and India, or if the enhanced US organization has ‘pushed’ the two entertainers to attempt to determine their disparities. Despite the impulse, the way that the two sides are talking as opposed to going head to head at the boundary proclaims a much needed development in the area, particularly if the belligerence that was arising out of New Delhi in the relatively recent past is recalled.
