MILAN (Reuters) – In a newspaper interview on Wednesday, the head of the Volkswagen (ETR: VOWG p) brand was quoted as saying that Lamborghini wants to have two hybrid super sports cars that run on e-fuels after 2030.
Stephan Winkelmann, the CEO of Lamborghini, told the Italian newspaper Il Corriere Della Sera that synthetic fuels would make it possible for the car company to have very low carbon emissions.
Lamborghini, like its rivals Ferrari (NYSE: RACE), Aston Martin Lagonda, and McLaren, is attempting to figure out how to transition to battery power without sacrificing the high performance that has made its cars so expensive.
Winkelmann said, “We don’t know yet if there will be enough of this fuel to meet the needs of all manufacturers.” “Lawmakers need to follow us down this road.”
Along with biofuels, synthetic fuels called “e-fuels” are being developed so that modified versions of combustion engines can still be used instead of completely switching to battery electric vehicles (BEV).
Lamborghini, which is part of the Volkswagen Group through Audi, wants to turn all of its models into hybrids between 2020 and 2024. Its first fully electric model is expected at the end of the decade.
