Tokyo Stock Exchange ended the day with Japan stocks taking a dip, as sectors like Paper & Pulp, Transport, and Railway & Bus witnessed losses, pulling down the overall market.
When the closing bell rang in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 slipped by 0.25%.
Leading the pack on the Nikkei 225 were impressive performances by Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. (TYO:4568), which climbed 6.82% or 266.00 points, settling at 4,166.00 at the end of the session. At the same time, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (TYO:9107) gained 5.58% or 206.00 points, closing at 3,899.00. Dai-ichi Life Holdings Inc (TYO:8750) saw a rise of 3.97% or 111.50 points to reach 2,919.50 in the late trading hours.
On the flip side, Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. (TYO:9983) struggled and fell by 2.54% or 930.00 points, ending at 35,700.00. Takara Holdings Inc. (TYO:2531) witnessed a decline of 2.33% or 27.50 points, settling at 1,153.00. Similarly, Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. (TYO:3099) experienced a 2.19% or 32.50 point drop, closing at 1,453.00.
In terms of numbers, declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with 2223 falling against 1379 advancing, while 254 remained unchanged.
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (TYO:9107) saw its shares reaching a five-year high, rising by 5.58% or 206.00 to 3,899.00.
The Nikkei Volatility index, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, increased by 2.41% to 19.57.
As for commodities, August delivery crude oil experienced a 1.65% rise, amounting to 1.15 and reaching $70.94 per barrel. On the other hand, Brent oil for September delivery fell by 0.51% or 0.39, hitting $75.86 per barrel. The August Gold Futures contract witnessed a 0.10% decline or 1.85, trading at $1,931.75 per troy ounce.
The USD/JPY currency pair saw a 0.09% rise, reaching 144.59, while EUR/JPY climbed by 0.27% to 157.59.
The US Dollar Index Futures experienced a 0.06% decline, settling at 102.68.
Overall, the Tokyo Stock Exchange saw a downward trend in Japan stocks, with specific sectors leading the losses. However, there were notable performances by some companies, contributing to the market’s dynamics.
