France’s Safran will pay $17.2 million to settle bribery charges made by the US against China.

As part of a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department over bribes its subsidiaries are said to have paid in China, French jet engine maker Safran SA (SAF.PA) will pay about $17.2 million, according to a statement released by the DoJ on Friday.

The DoJ said that the Paris-based aerospace supplier will have to give up profits from contracts that were “corruptly won” and kept by its U.S. subsidiary, Monogram Systems.
Monogram and Safran’s German unit, Evac GmbH, are said to have paid bribes to the Chinese government to get “lucrative” contracts to build train bathrooms.

Reuters asked Safran for a comment, but Safran didn’t answer right away.

The DoJ said that the company, which makes engines for Boeing 737 planes with General Electric (GE) through their joint venture CFM, will continue to help the government with its ongoing investigation.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, Safran has also taken steps to make things right. One employee who was allegedly involved in the misconduct was fired, and another’s deferred compensation was taken away.
