FM Qureshi criticises India for using a double standard in voting against Ukraine’s aggression in the UN Security Council.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi chastised India on Sunday for its hypocrisy and double standards at the UN, as the Security Council debated a resolution calling on Russia to halt its war on Ukraine.

In a veiled allusion to the United Nations Security Council’s recent vote on the Russia-Ukraine war, Qureshi said in a video message that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government’s double standards had been revealed to the world.

On the one hand, it declared itself a member of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) and asserted its role as a net security provider, but on the other hand, it abstained when a resolution was tabled, he said, adding that India pleaded with the West for support against China, but when the time came, it sent mixed signals to those with whom it claimed to have strong ties.

According to the United Nations, Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on February 25 that would have required Moscow to immediately cease its invasion on Ukraine and evacuate all soldiers, a decision that other Council members described as terrible but unavoidable.

While eleven of the Council’s fifteen members voted in favour of the document, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates voted against it.

In response to India’s failed airstrikes on February 27, 2019, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the country is united and ready to fight back against any aggression.

The foreign minister thanked the country’s military for defeating terrorism and making sure that every child in the country would have a good life.

He also commended Shuhada and their families for their incomparable sacrifices and brilliance.
