Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc, is “seriously considering” developing a new social media platform, the billionaire said in a tweet on Saturday.
In a tweet, someone asked if he would consider making a social media network that used an open-source algorithm that valued free speech and had a low tolerance for misinformation. Musk said he would think about it.
Musk, a frequent Twitter user himself, has recently been critical of the social media network and its restrictions. According to him, the firm is weakening democracy by violating free speech norms.
His message comes a day after he conducted a Twitter survey in which he asked people if they felt Twitter adhered to the idea of free expression, to which more than 70% responded negatively.
“The results of this survey will have significant ramifications. Please use caution before voting, “he urged on Friday.
If Musk proceeds with the creation of a new platform, he would join a growing list of technological businesses marketing themselves as defenders of free speech in order to attract users who believe their opinions are restricted on platforms like Twitter, Meta Platform’s Facebook, and Alphabet’s YouTube.
None of the firms, including Donald Trump’s Truth Social, Twitter rivals Gettr and Parler, or video site Rumble, have come close to matching the reach and popularity of the established platforms so far.
