CEO: Lufthansa will hire almost 20,000 more people by the end of 2023.

Berlin (Reuters): Carsten Spohr, the CEO of Lufthansa, says that the company wants to hire nearly 20,000 new people by the end of 2023 as the aviation industry recovers from the pandemic.

During the pandemic, which shut down air travel around the world, the flagship carrier went from having just under 140,000 employees to having around 100,000. This summer, there were problems in some places where too many employees had been cut.

A Lufthansa representative said that 12,000 of the jobs would be brand new and that about 8,000 of the jobs would be to replace people who were leaving the company.

Spohr told reporters on Monday night that July and August were great for the airline and that “we have no plans to leave the profitability we reached in the second quarter.”

But, he said, the airline won’t be back to its pre-crisis capacity levels until 2020. This is because a recession is coming, and Germany is likely to be hit harder than other countries.
