Black Friday and holiday sales make Shoprite in South Africa busy.

(Reuters) – JOHANNESBURG -The biggest grocery store chain in South Africa, Shoprite, said on Tuesday that its sales for the first half of the year went up by 16.8%. This was helped by a record Black Friday and holiday season, when people with little money and people with more money went shopping for food deals.

Shoprite said that group sales for the six months that ended on January 1 went up to 106.3 billion rand, which is about $6.10 billion. Sales went up by 15.2% in the second quarter.
